Very Reactive Metals on the Periodic Table: Understanding Their Properties

Metal displacement is a phenomenon that occurs when a more reactive metal forms a cation and displaces a less reactive metal from its compounds. In the periodic table, elements are arranged in increasing order of their atomic numbers and grouped by similar properties in vertical columns. The trio of unreactive metals, copper, silver, and gold, sit together in Group I, while lead in Group IV is moderately reactive. Transition metals, on the other hand, are generally less reactive than main group metals.

Within each group, the metal lower down the group is more reactive, having a greater tendency to lose electrons to form cations. For instance, Group I alkali metals like lithium and sodium are more reactive than Group II alkaline earth metals like magnesium and calcium.
